ST. HELENA, Calif. (July 31, 2018) - Rico Abreu’s four-day campaign with Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions took the California native to four tracks in four days across three states; one of the season’s most demanding weekend swings. When the dust settled on Sunday night, Abreu had earned a pair of top-ten finishes in three feature starts, one of which inside the top-five. The driver of the Rico Abreu Racing/Abreu Vineyards/Alpinestars/Lucas Oil/Rhino Wipe/Priority Aviation/No. 24 sprint car now owns 20 top-ten finishes in 2018.
Perhaps Abreu’s most impressive performance of the weekend, the St. Helena, Calif., native kicked-off the four-day trek through the Midwest with a fifth place finish during main event action at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis., on Thursday, July 26. Head-turning enough, Abreu earned his top-five from well outside of the top-ten, actually charging ahead from 16th on the grid in 35 circuits. Abreu qualified for main event action by finishing fourth during his respective heat race.
Abreu’s second top-ten finish in four days occurred during the weekend's final night of action on Sunday, July 29, at 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa. The former Chili Bowl Nationals champion finished ninth, officially, during the All Star Circuit of Champions A-main, advancing quickly from row seven.
Other weekend results include finishing 14th during action at the Jackson (Minn.) Motorplex on Friday, July 27, followed by an eighth place finish during B-main competition at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday, July 28. Although his Knoxville run ended mid-pack in the B-main, Abreu showed some promise, actually moving ahead five spots in 12 laps against a stout field. There were 56 entrants in action.
“It wasn’t a bad weekend. I think we were a little disappointed with our performance at Knoxville especially with the Nationals coming up in a few weeks. I think we have time to get our program figured out,” Rico Abreu explained. “I can’t thank my team enough for their hard work and dedication this season. We’ve been racing a pretty wild schedule filled with a lot of late nights and long road trips. They work hard. I’m proud of them.”
Rico Abreu’s upcoming plans have yet to be determined. A weekend schedule will be posted on social media during the coming days.
